MANAGING MIGRATION FLOWS THE FOCUS OF VARVITSIOTIS MEETING WITH IOM’S LAURA THOMPSON

The management of the constantly increasing migration flows arriving from Greece’s sea borders – and the high chances that these will increase further due to conflict and instability in the Middle East – dominated a meeting between Greece’s Shipping and Aegean Minister Miltiadis Varvitsios and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Deputy Director General Laura Thompson in Athens on Thursday.

According to an announcement, Varvitsiotis briefed Ambassador Thompson on the ministry’s strategy for tackling the problem and the procedures followed for the reception of irregular migrants, while Thompson expressed satisfaction for the progress made by Greece in this area in recent years.

They also agreed on the immediate start of technical meetings between the two sides to further improve conditions for the reception of migrant flows, based on international standards for the respect of human rights, and on the launch of IOM briefings for Greek coast guard personnel serving in areas where the migration pressures are most intense.
